Three is the default. A tile that should carry more weight spans more tracks with its own class, as the lead feature on the Legal home does. Choose the count so every row fills at every width: with sm:col-span-2 the lead tile is a full row of two from sm and two of the three tracks from lg, so it and four narrow tiles fill both layouts. The tracks follow the window width, so this box shows three columns only in a wide window.

columns="2" keeps two tracks from sm all the way up, for tiles that each carry a mock-up or a longer paragraph. Use an even count. The Tech careers page sets four reasons to join this way, alternating the tones so no two neighbours match.

columns="4" sets four tracks from lg; use four or eight tiles. columns="5" keeps two tracks until xl and then puts five on one row, so the first tile takes sm:col-span-2 xl:col-span-1 and the other four fill two rows beneath it. At a fifth of the row each tile is narrow, so either one only suits a few words per tile; neither brochure site uses them today. For a set of values to be read one at a time, the About page uses a Spotlight instead.
